From Jesus to Christ

Like St. Paul or Blaise Pascal, Rudolf Steiner first sought Christ through individual experience, without the aid of external documents. It is this experience of the divine spark within oneself that sheds light on the events in Palestine 2000 years ago. Christ Jesus showed everyone what every human being can become if he understands himself: a free and conscious bearer of the "I am". For this to happen, a god (Christ) had to appear on the stage of history and live, for three years, the destiny of a man (Jesus of Nazareth).

In these lectures given in Karlsruhe in 1911, Steiner opens up a new understanding of this sublime act, both cosmic and earthly, to modern consciousness, and prepares his listeners for the spiritual vision of the Risen One present among men.

This book examines and compares the different ways of approaching Christ: religious faith, mystical union and spiritual investigation. Jesus of Nazareth was the bearer of this Being of Christ, from his baptism in the Jordan to his death on the cross. But at the Resurrection, this Being appears in another "form" than the one it had left. Saint Paul spoke of it as the incorruptible body that triumphs over the body of death, as the second Adam who redeems the first Adam. The essence of this "form" is explored here in depth.
